Teacher Training

Training to become an Alexander Technique teacher is a substantial professional and personal undertaking. It involves the gradual development of practical skill, perceptual awareness, and a clear understanding of the principles that underpin the work.

At the Manchester Alexander Training School (MATTS), training is structured to support this process over time, through close work with an experienced training team in a well-established and vibrant training environment.

The training

The MATTS course is a Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT) approved teacher training, leading to professional qualification.

The training is primarily practical in nature. Students learn through direct experience—developing both their own use of themselves and the skills required to work effectively with others. Working with a range of experienced teachers, over time students are able to take an increasingly active role in their own learning. This leads to the capacity to work independently, and to apply the principles of the Technique in a clear and practical way.

A flexible approach to training

MATTS offers a level of flexibility that is unusual among training courses. While some students train full-time over three years, many choose to train part-time over a longer period.

Students are free to train at any pace that suits their circumstances, attending on any school days they prefer, without notice.

This allows each student to find a rhythm of study that works for them at every point in their training. In order to maintain continuity and depth of study, we generally recommend (but do not require) that students aim for a minimum of half-time attendance.
